Accommodation in Germany

The Right Accommodation Plan Makes Your First Days in Germany Easier

If you have received admission from a university in Germany, your visa process is ongoing, or you are planning to move to Germany soon, accommodation is one of the earliest steps to consider.

While choosing between dormitories, shared apartments, private student residences, or renting your own place, factors such as budget, city, transportation, safety, and application timing should all be evaluated together.

1. Student Dormitories

Student dormitories are one of the most affordable and practical accommodation options in Germany. They are usually located close to universities and managed by Studierendenwerk.

Average Price For 2026, approximately €250–450 per month in many cities.
Who is it for? Suitable for students who want to manage their budget and live in a social environment.
Dormitory spots are limited. Even before receiving your admission letter, application dates should be researched and applications should be made early if possible.

2. Shared Apartments (WG)

WG (Wohngemeinschaft) means sharing an apartment with others. It is both an economical and social option for students. You have your own room, while kitchen and bathroom are usually shared.

Average Price Depending on the city, around €350–800 per month in 2026.
Advantage A great option for practicing German, meeting new people, and adapting quickly to city life.

3. Private Student Residences

Private student residences are generally more modern, furnished, and easier to move into. Some may include internet, gym facilities, study areas, or cleaning services.

Average Price Around €550–950 per month in 2026. Higher in large cities.
Who is it for? Ideal for students who want a more comfortable and ready-to-move-in living space.

4. Renting Your Own Apartment

Renting a studio or small apartment is an option for students who want their own space. However, it is usually the most expensive and hardest option to find.

Average Price Around €700–1,500 depending on the city and location in 2026.
Things to Consider Deposit, proof of income, SCHUFA, rental contract, and additional costs must be checked in advance.

5. Temporary Accommodation

If your permanent accommodation is not ready when you arrive in Germany, temporary solutions can be used. Hostels, short-term rentals, or temporary student housing can be helpful for the first weeks.

Temporary accommodation is a good starting point; however, going to Germany without a long-term plan may lead to a stressful housing search.

6. Difference Between Kaltmiete and Warmmiete

One of the most confusing topics in Germany rental listings is the difference between Kaltmiete and Warmmiete.

Kaltmiete Basic rent only. Heating, water, maintenance fees, and other costs are not included.
Warmmiete Includes rent plus some additional costs. Students should usually calculate their budget based on Warmmiete.

7. Estimated Rent Ranges by City (2026)

Berlin WG room: approx. €550–750
Dorm: approx. €300–450
Studio: approx. €900+
Munich WG room: approx. €700–900+

8. What Should You Pay Attention to When Searching?

  • Apply early for dorms and WGs
  • Always get a written rental contract
  • Do not pay deposits to untrusted individuals
  • Verify the authenticity of listings
  • Ask about Warmmiete vs Kaltmiete
  • Check transportation connections to your university
